After doing some work with Craig on one panel this is what happened to the "They do in the magazines I read..."

This work is not a painting. It’s a 2D installation. All of it made of found objects and spare materials that are the negative shapes of designed (possibly) functional objects. Coincidence and randomness was a big part of the process except for the aesthetic calls made in terms of composition and colour. The idea is exactly the same as any other installation/sculpture made of found objects:

-playing around with the status of objects and media by re-contextualizing them. Status is attributed by an elite to a certain set of media and materials and as son as that is understood by the majority, that same elite, that set those criteria, changes them in order to keep the “good taste” exclusive to a few. What previously was considered to be a high status material can easily be considered kitsch or common after a few years. The pleasure also comes from the fact that this creative process is “barely legal”… according to Coventry University security guards:
-taking objects from a skip is theft.
But if you think about the objects we find in there, one can conclude that those were rejected not just by the elite but also by everyone else. We just rescued them before it was too late. By using these, as practitioners, we are feeding society with its sub products. Recycling, subverting, reversing and manipulating the process of acquisition of status are a big part of this kind of work. Take materials from the bottom of the pyramid and feeding them to the top as a “work of art”. There is absolutely no difference between this process in what matters to this triptych or any other installation we did before. Posted by Picasa
