Practitioner Statement

The science I studied for almost a decade strongly influenced the work I’ve developed in Sculpture, Installation, Photography and Painting. That is also why I’m interested in many ideas that are common to philosophy, art and science, such as: (the 4th) dimension, (im)permanence, Improvisation, Randomness, the Unknown, Persistence, Silence, Intention and Intuition.
The artistic context within which I develop my ideas started with Bosh and Da Vinci. After them a few apparently random 20th century practitioners contributed in both conceptual and visual ways. Probably the most relevant were Duchamp, Kandinsky, Cage, Rauschenberg Tinguely, Rebecca Horn and Basquiat.
For my Sculptures and Installations I work with a method that can start with written notes (usually lists and small sketches) or a group of objects I collect from skips. Sometimes collaborating with friends I develop a dialogue between the ideas and the objects making them as interactive as possible and hopefully inducing a sequence of events in the observer’s mind. “The object” becomes a riddle/catalyst for a chain reaction that starts in me and ends in the observer.
My photographic work is shot in Portugal and is a reflection of the Portuguese past and the consequences that it has in the present. The pleasure of making these images comes from the idiosyncratic traces of irony only a castiço (“indigene”) can find.
Painting changed extensively while I was doing my degree. Probably the media I get most obsessed with is the same one I chose to use only when it becomes impossible to avoid. The main consequence of this was the production of a couple of extremely large canvas conceptually elaborate and painted in explosive colours. All the time I forced myself to hold the impulse made me lose control and obviously feel freer while I was making them.
Finally it’s vital to make clear that the context of my work is not just art historical. Portuguese Poetry (Alexandre O’Neil, Herberto Helder and Fernando Pessoa), Philosophy (Buddhism, Plato, Hegel, Nietzsche and Wittgenstein), Science (Blogglie, Einstein, Bohr, Watson, Crick and Stephen Hawking) and even political worries give me motivation to feed others with the signs that made me who I am.

Significance

I feel anger for no reason. Every now and then I wouldn't mind losing control completely... not because of alcohol, or drugs, not even because I'm having a lot o pleasure. I want to lose control for no reason. To let my true self free in the world. No boundaries. No boredom. No rules. I would be aggressive. An animal struggling to kill the world. No explanations. No feelings. Just a body screaming out of impulse. With no meditations, expectations or dreams I would kill this life inside me. Show how rude I truly am. I can't forget the pain I used to have inside. I can't forget almost anything, and believe me that is a curse. Almost the worst anyone can have. But I learned to use it in good ways and now I have fun playing around with memories and replacing them by ambitious dreams. I want to able to say no to death. Show me a way to be an animal again. Show me how simple I am. I need to find something predictable inside me. The only thing that is in fact permanent inside me é esse impulso para amar. Mas como é que eu não tive medo antes? Porque é que ainda não sinto medo de sentir? A verdade é que cada vez sou mais atropelado por estas vagas de paixão. Estes impulsos tornam-se tão fortes que deixo de ser eu. I'm just a wish to be. I'm 100% desire but I see love in that percentage. I need no body to be. If I was gone today my ghost would do as much as I will do, except for one thing: to corrupt my true nature in order to love beyond desire.

When I came back I used to say: "home" when I saw this place. Now I just wonder if I'm going to dream in Portuguese or English... Or if I'm going to dream at all... I'm waking my life too much.  Posted by Hello

Requiem for Buddism

Friends give you memories and feelings. Images flash your mind and then you realize you're just a stone falling down the hill.

Impermanence - Smoke - death - memories - touch
Karma - Ethics - love - feelings - smell
Meditation - protection - introspection - breath - taste
Intuition - creation - expression - making/playing - vision
Silence - power over your mind - understanding nature - interaction- listening

Random shots that make your heart hurt.
Missing love, waiting for your family, remembering your friends as if they were dead already. Listening to classical music at 6:30 in the morning. Not sleeping because your heart is troubled with distance. Wishing for everything to work perfectly when you know perfection is an illusion. Will I be alone? Will this life kill me? Every life kills everyone. But I "see everyone's greatness" and I hope that is enough to make it worth it.

Shots and Pics

I've been feeling strange in this world. We all hide the fact that there is no honor left in our world. We hide our own fear. We all know we are killers when we shoot. Cameras and guns. The paintbrush and the sword can't be forgoten. I have to win my war with blades and no bullets.
